VIA Centro Plaza
Project Details
Centro Plaza, located on the west side of San Antonio, is a robust transit facility servicing city buses, VIA’s PRIMO bus rapid transit system, future commuter rail service and B-Cycle, the city’s bike share program. The plaza enables connectivity for these converging transit systems.
The central courtyard is a lively public space. Generous rows of trees and randomly placed tables and chairs promote relaxed conversation. Public art is incorporated throughout the plaza, anchored by a dynamic light tower by artist Bill FitzGibbons that serves as a beacon for the center.
Sustainable design strategies are deftly incorporated into the site. Photovoltaic panels cover 50% of the Grand Canopy’s roof while storm-water runoff is captured in cisterns below the plaza’s pavement.
