The Barbara Jordan Terminal at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has gained recognition and respect as an Austin icon. The exposed steel trusses and cable purlins of the soaring airside concourse roof, the intricate entrance canopies, and the monumental concrete and granite entrance columns are examples of exposed structure used aesthetically. These structures reinforce the architectural theme of high technology grounded in traditional materials. The exterior curtain wall, stairs, handrails, and concourse kiosks also evolved, through collaboration between architect and engineer, as primary aesthetic structures.
